The Benefits of Roll Grooving to Join Pipe Together

Roll grooving has been around for more than 50 years and is the most common preferred method of grooving pipe by professionals. It is a quick and cost effective way to mechanically join pipe. It can be used on different types of pipe, on many sizes and wall thicknesses.

How is the pipe groove formed? Roll grooving moves a small portion of the pipe wall orbitally by a cold forming process. The end of the pipe is placed between the roll set of a grooving machine. As the roll set closes, the pipe compresses as it rotates. This leaves a smooth recessed groove around the outside diameter and an indent on the inside diameter of the pipe being grooved. One the pipe is grooved, it can be connected by a Victaulic, Grinnell or other brand groove clamps.

Roll grooving is used on Schedule 5 through ANSI standard wall thickness carbon steel and stainless steel pipe and copper and aluminum pipe or tubing. It can be used up to Schedule 80 PVC pipe. Roll grooving machines are available from 3/4” up to 48” or larger.
